Tales of the Peculiar Book Review

Updated: Oct 7, 2021

Hello book lovers!

It's been a couple of months since I read Tales of the Peculiar, so this review is long overdue. Tales of the Peculiar is an anthology of short stories taking place in the mesmerizing world of Ransom Riggs' Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children, in a time before the story of the heroes we know and love takes place. The book was released on September 3rd, 2016 by Dutton Books and contains magnificent illustrations by Andrew Davidson.

About the book:

Before Miss Peregrine gave them a home, the story of peculiars was written in the Tales.

Wealthy cannibals who dine on the discarded limbs of peculiars. A fork-tongued princess. The origins of the first ymbryne. These are but a few of the truly brilliant stories in Tales of the Peculiar—known to hide information about the peculiar world—first introduced by Ransom Riggs in his Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series.

Riggs now invites you to share his secrets of peculiar history, with a collection of original stories, as collected and annotated by Millard Nullings, ward of Miss Peregrine and scholar of all things peculiar.

Genre: fantasy, short stories collection

My Rating: 5/5

Pages: 192

This is a spoiler-free review!

Not having read Miss Peregrine before, I think this was the perfect introduction to Riggs' s world. The book contains 10 short stories, set in different places around the world and introduces characters from different eras.

The writing style transforms the story before our very eyes, with vivid descriptions and realistic dialogue. The tales are short enough not to bore the reader, avoiding the addition of unnecessary information, but long enough to perfectly convey the story and allow us to take a peek at the mechanics of this world. There is a lesson to be learned from each and every one of them and it almost reminds one of the fairytales written in the beginning of printed literature, when the stories -although haunting and most often gruesome in some way- managed to guide the conscious mind and its actions. True to that form, some of the tales would indeed shock and even trigger some readers, if the writing hadn't dismissed them as mundane everyday occurrences.

The series of the Peculiars has journeyed all around the globe, earning fans of every age with its unique style and unforgettable characters. If you are hesitant to follow Miss Peregrine and her Peculiar Children onto their many adventures, this is a prime example of Mr. Riggs's unique writing style, as well as of the lore and history of his masterfully crafted world.
